Love Your Liver – the results!

Many of you came out to support the second annual Love Your Liver roadshow that we held in collaboration with the British Liver Trust in January.

Almost 500 of you in fact, came along in ice cold temperatures to our pop up liver clinics in Glasgow, Middlesbrough, Bradford, Liverpool, Bristol, Portsmouth, Cardiff and Birmingham – so we wanted to say thank you, and to share the results!

This year, we gave out more liver tests than 2012, by a whopping two-thirds.  495 people had a FibroScan liver test and got the chance to discuss any health concerns, and practical solutions to reduce the risks of developing liver disease with our experts. This compares to 298 who were tested last year.

Nationwide, 20 per cent of those seen were referred to their GPs for further investigation. On 2012’s Love Your Liver tour, the number was 26 per cent.

The average age of those tested in 2013 was 51, compared to an average age of 42 last year.

We also gave out countless samples of Eisberg, and we created a special mulled version to help keep the cold at bay.

Andrew Langford, Chief Executive of the British Liver Trust comments: ‘The second year of the Love Your Liver Roadshow saw it go from strength to strength. It was a great way to reach the public directly and give them practical advice about how to love their livers.”

“It’s not about a quick fix in January, to repair the liver and keep it healthy, people need to follow our three step plan all year round 1) Take two to three days off alcohol every week 2) Cut down on sugar and fat 3) Get regular exercise.”

Here’s to LYL 2014!

Winter Blues, Reds, Whites and Rosés

So this week I have been stricken with the worst of all illnesses in human history… ok,
maybe I’m exaggerating, but this is definitely the worst cold that I have ever been cursed with.

How I got it, I’m not sure… I’ve been in at home most of the time, always wrapped up when I’m outside and… oh. It must be the last curse of the university term; library germs. Freshers’ flu all over again. So I’m swapping my Eisberg wine for a cocktail of cough medicines and paracetamol.

Well, that isn’t completely true. If anything, this is a perfect excuse to stay in bed, only occasionally getting up for some mulled wine (which I am using purely for its medicinal qualities) and to eat as much hot buttered toast as I want, much to the annoyance of my flatmate Jen, who is on a low-carb diet. Beautifully though, she can still enjoy Eisberg when she wants a little treat or two.

In fact, I think she’s enjoying Eisberg a little too much at the moment… my supplies are running low fast and I can’t go to the shops at the moment with my nose as red as Rudolph’s and my dribbling nose, not to mention the fact that no matter how hard I try, I just can’t seem to get out of my slippers.

Perhaps I’ll send Jen off to do a bit of treat shopping for me, to cheer me up maybe? I’ll even chuck in a bottle of Eisberg for her. My generosity as a flatmate knows no bounds.

So, while she’s off to buy a few bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon from Waitrose, I can update my diary and prepare to recommence operation SMLOBC after I lose this bug. But the fact is, my operation is almost finished, mission almost complete. I guess I just need to keep up with it now, and not lapse into my old ways. I’ll watch Titanic with a glass of Eisberg instead of neglecting work with a hangover.

Presents, A Slice of Cake and a Bottle of Eisberg

First things first, I have something important to say…I didn’t win the lottery with my magic non-alcoholic numbers. But I am just about managing to lift the hump of disappointment off my back and continue with operation SMLOBC… which has been somewhat neglected from my life the past week.

It’s not that I was bored with it. In fact, it has given me the busiest life that I have ever had. I just still felt a bit too comfortable. I needed to mix it up.

So, this week, my mission was to begin my new job search. Eisberg Chardonnay spritzer in hand, I have once again been using the internet for the better. But I didn’t seem to find anything to interest me. Plus, now that I’m trying to ‘Love my Liver’ more, money isn’t an issue. I am comfortably busy and happy.

So my next mission was to organise a last minute pre-Christmas party at my flat. I got excited as soon as I began looking for decorations online, with yet another Eisberg spritzer in my hand, this time using the Riesling. However, midway through making my Facebook event, I realised that it clashed with my niece’s birthday party.

So off I was, five days later, two bottles of Eisberg in my arms, along with a huge birthday cake and enough presents to sink… well, a battle ship bath toy. Handing a bottle of Eisberg to my breastfeeding sister as I walked in, I was greeted by a hug straight away.

The same followed a couple of minutes later when my niece saw her birthday cake. Possibly the best auntie/sister/relative ever?

End of the night, I was exhausted. Running around after my five nieces and nephews after a chocolate cake sugar boosts is enough to keep me off drama for a while. I think I’ll stay away from mixing it up for now… well, except from an Eisberg spritzer at the end of a difficult day. And maybe the occasional last minute eBay auction to keep my adrenaline going…

Give it a Gamble?

4, 11, 30, 5, 2760 and 26. These numbers have been more significant to me than any other this week. Sounds dramatic, I know!

FOUR and ELEVEN

I now have four out of eleven Christmas presents. It’s coming along, but not quick enough for my liking. Back to the drawing board/convenience of eBay I think!

THIRTY

There are thirty days in the average month. Really, this number should be <30. Important because it’s LESS THAN THIRTY DAYS until Christmas and I’m starting to lose my cool.

FIVE

A more positive number here… my adorable niece turned five years old this week… less than ¾ of the way until she’s an adult. I managed to find her an amazing birthday present in the form of a keyboard (and a bottle of Eisberg for her mum to apologize for all the noise she’ll be making for the next month with it).

TWO THOUSAND, SEVEN HUNDRED AND SIXTY

The number of words my assignment totalled this morning. Almost time for hand in… which I am dreading massively, but I guess at least it’s over with now.

And my sixth, most important number to sum up the past week?

TWENTY SIX

The number of calories in a glass of Eisberg… the only thing that’s been helping me last the week. It’s a guilt free treat in the evening and I’ve even dropped of an inch from my waist (every little helps!)

Another accomplishment is the first homemade roast dinner that I rustled up on Sunday! Delicious. Oh and I found a pound coin in my laundry yesterday, maybe I should use my newfound luck and place my lottery numbers.

4, 11, 30, 5, 26 and… not 2760. And how about number 1, to celebrate my lost waist inch?

1, 4, 5, 11, 26, 30. Cheers!

Part Two of ‘Operation SMLOBC’

Deadlines, deadlines, deadlines. One week until my first assignment of the year is due in, three shifts a week at work and only four weeks until the stressful week that is Christmas.

But stressed? Me? Strangely no. This week my detox is going well. Alcohol free (thanks to Eisberg), a regular(ish) sleeping pattern and no caffeine … Well, relatively. I’m down to one coffee a day, that’s got to count for something right? Now it’s time for part two Operation SMLOBC; Christmas shopping.

Normally right now I’d be reaching for the vodka to make my coffee Russian, but not today. Today I have grabbed my skinny latte with one spoon of sweetener (much healthier than my usual mocha) and started the day with a spot of pre-Christmas internet shopping. But finding good quality presents on websites that look like they haven’t changed since 1999 is boring.

So it’s time to get back to basics; down to the market I go! And I don’t just mean the greengrocers down the road… I mean the Christmas markets that come to my city, Manchester every year, the markets that look, sound and smell like Christmas. T

This year, I am focusing on presents though; not wasting my hard earned pennies on a £7 mulled wine that will only leave me stale in the morning. So I have come up with yet another festive solution… making my own mulled wine out of my beloved Eisberg.

Researching recipes on the internet, making my own mulled wine is far easier than I ever thought possible, even I can do it in my student kitchen! I guess it’s off to the aforementioned greengrocers to buy clementines, limes and Morrison’s for my Eisberg and a couple of cinnamon sticks. Maybe I’ll get myself some new shoes to celebrate saving money on alcohol?

Shopping = Walking = Weight Loss = Fabulous New Years Eve.

A New Me for the Festive Season!

It’s November, less than seven weeks until Christmas and my university workload is increasing. Workload and ‘partymode’ are becoming harder for me to juggle every week and hangovers certainly don’t help me study.

I have decided it is time for me to begin Operation ‘Sort My Life Out Before Christmas’ – Operation SMLOBC (my catchy name for it) has three main aims;

  • Lose Weight
  • Balance work and partying
  • Make the dreaded hangover a thing of the past

With only nine months until I’m 20 years old and become a Proper Adult, I need to meet these aims ASAP. So I’ve been googling easy ways to diet, easy ways to organize my life and easy ways to stop hangovers… starting with…

  •  Step One: Get a diary
  • Step Two: Use the diary

So the next obvious answer is to cut down on alcohol. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a common student solution, but it’s the best one I have found and I’m going to stick with it. No hangovers sounds great to me, and would certainly save me about 72 hours a month of moping in bed feeling sorry for myself.

So my new and improved weekly shop encompassed the Morrison’s fruit and veg aisle buying peppers and then a visit to the wine aisle! It’s not what you think! It was for a divine rosé, with only 26 calories a glass… Eisberg, you have saved my life.

Next on the agenda of Operation SMLOBC – Movie night tonight with my flat mate Jen, watching the gorgeous Bradley Cooper in ‘The Hangover’ (the irony!) while introducing her to my new discovery. She’ll be so happy that I have introduced her to a wine with no hangover side effects that she’ll barely mind me stealing all of the popcorn… that’s healthy, right?

The Baby Haze

In my last blog post I was worrying about the baby coming early and missing my baby shower… well, my worries were unfounded as Baby kept me waiting five days past my estimated due date!

The baby shower was absolutely brilliant, we played lots of games and I was thoroughly spoilt with gifts for Baby and me… I definitely recommend having one if you are expecting.

Anyway, as my due date approached, we checked over the details of the birth plan and did a ‘dry run’ with the birthing pool.

We worked out that the pool would easily fit where the dining table was, but what we forgot to check was whether we could get the dining table out of the room, in one piece anyway – I’ll put the Hubby’s cross threats of sawing the dining table in half down to sheer panic of his impending fatherhood!

Eventually the birth pool was set up, just in time for Elliott’s swift but painful arrival at 09.56am.

The last 14 weeks have passed by like a whirlwind. I have not had a full nights sleep yet, and he is definitely keeping me on my toes – but I wouldn’t change him for the world.

I am breastfeeding, so I’m continuing to avoid alcohol and stick to the alternatives, I can’t quite imagine coping with a newborn and a hangover anyway.

Sleep is a precious commodity nowadays, what with 2 or 3 feeds throughout the night and early mornings with my eldest son, I need to do everything I can to rest when I can.

It’s not easy… but it’s worth it!

A weighty decision

Not drinking alcohol has an extremely pleasant side-effect that has up until recently saved me a huge amount of pain.

At the age of 17, I weighed 12 stone. At the age of 24 I still weigh 12 stone. 4 years of student living (little sport, greasy foods, armchair spectating) and 2 as a busy young professional with little time to cook proper food, yet I thankfully put on absolutely no weight at all.

Of course I can’t attribute it purely to not drinking alcohol, I’m sure a fast metabolism had a lot to do with it, but many of my peers had gotten noticeably larger through the first two years of university, whereas I ate like a pig and stayed slim. I even moved to Paris where I lived next door to a patisserie without piling on the pounds and trust me, I was their most valued customer!

I used to tell myself that not having a hangover was the greatest benefit of passing on alcohol, a clear head and a recollection of what had happened, but as eveyone else had to deal with loosening their belts, I smiled and came to realise my true blessing.

It’s only now, however at the grand old age of 24 that I’ve had to face the idea that I might have to start exercising soon. My early decision to cut out drinking means I’ve little to sacrifice and I actually envy drinkers who can ultimately just decide to cut out booze to watch the weight drop off. Me, I have to think about taking up sport or eating salad.

A truly unenviable decision.

Everything in moderation!

Right, this is it. This is the heaviest I have ever been in my life. I am unfit, I am completely out of shape and things have got to change. No one else can do it for me. Also I think I have been drinking far too much of late. It has been far too easy to spend the day running round like a headless chicken and then spending the evening slobbing out with a glass of red or three!! I have used all the excuses in the world to justify it. I work so hard, it helps me relax, its my vice, etc, etc, etc!!! I think my mantra is going to be “stop being greedy and everything in moderation!” Food, wine – and exercise, (as in up the level, cant reduce zero!). My evening treat is going to be replaced by other beverages instead of the old vino. I shall save this for a weekend evening. I fancy trying the non- alcoholic stuff like eisberg. For the good of my health (and my vanity) the changes have to start now!!!!!!
